The chances of being audited by the IRS also vary depending on the geographic location of the tax payers or where the tax payer lives. According to the IRS tax statistics the following cities have had the highest IRS audit rates since 1988 in this order:

  • Anchorage
  • Las vegas
  • Cheyenne
  • San Francisco
  • Laguna Niguel (near San Diego)
  • Los Angeles
  • Boise
  • Atlanta

The cities with lowest IRS audit rates are:

  • Albany
  • Milwaukee
  • Boston
  • Newark
  • Detroit
  • Philadelphia
  • Cincinnati
  • Baltimore

Tax payers who live in the western united states are much more likely to be exposed to an IRS audit than those who live in the east or midwestern of the us. The IRS does not provide answers to why these cities get audited more than other cities. However, according to IRS statistics, moving to low audited cities may decrease a tax payer' s chances of being audited by the IRS.
